Introduction
Papers, Please is a dystopian, narrative-driven puzzle game set in the cold, oppressive state of Arstotzka. After a six-year war with neighboring Kolechia, Arstotzka has reclaimed the border town of Grestin, and it's your job to control who enters the country as an immigration inspector at the Grestin Border Checkpoint.
You will be tasked with reviewing documents presented by travelers, verifying their authenticity using a limited set of inspection tools, and deciding who can pass through to Arstotzka. Among the flood of immigrants and visitors seeking work, smugglers, spies, and even terrorists are lurking. Each decision you make can have far-reaching consequences, from preventing criminals from crossing the border to allowing innocent people to pass through — or condemning them to arrest.
As the story unfolds, you’ll face increasingly difficult moral choices, all while adhering to the harsh regulations set by the Ministry of Admission. The game’s pixel-art style and unique inspection mechanics combine with an immersive and thought-provoking narrative that delves into themes of immigration, crime, and the human cost of bureaucratic control.
With limited resources, it’s up to you to decide who to help, who to turn away, and who to betray. Will you uphold the law or compromise your integrity for personal gain or the safety of your family?
